Low, "Things We Lost In The Fire" (Kranky)
from Playboy, June 2001
Is it significant that Low comes from Duluth, where its so cold most of the
year that you can't move your fingers? Low's latest CD, Things We Lost In
The Fire (Kranky), takes some getting used to, like the Velvet
Underground did the first time you heard them. But when you get beyond
"Dude, this is slow," you get to "Dude, this is beautiful." Fire has
eerie melodies, sad harmonies, a guitar strummed once for every other band's
eight times and an occasional lonely cello. This is rock and roll for
contemplating your place in the universe. Its also good for napping and
existential despair.
